Quay Ingredient and a chilly stroll

I've wanted to revisit this little gem for quite a while now. Now that I am self employed and free from the constraints of an employer I love that I am able to pop in somewhere while it is peaceful, quiet and relaxing. This morning I was waiting to pick something up from the printers and my girls were at nursery so I grabbed the chance to stroll along the Quayside and treat myself to a yummy breakfast. I didn't bank on how chilly it would be so breakfast kind of trumped the stroll ;)

Quay Ingredient is a tiny little cafe right under the Tyne Bridge. It just has five tables and two low sofa tables so on a Saturday or Sunday it can be hard to squeeze in.  There is a nice atmosphere of accommodating your fellow diners, however, and people seem happy to move around so everyone can fit.

The breakfast menu is long with classic cooked breakfasts, eggs benedict, boiled eggs and soldiers, Craster kippers, pancakes, french toast, breakfast sandwiches and some different options like avocado and poached eggs on toast. I chose asparagus spears, ham, poached egg and potato cakes, served with hollandaise sauce. I loved my breakfast!! The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the ham was a crispy piece of Parma ham. And any cafe that automatically serves the hollandaise on the side is already a winner with me (the amount of hollandaise you have is a very personal thing if you ask me!) I washed it down with two lattes to try to fend off the cold!  I also spied a bacon and sausage sandwich which looked gorgeous too.

The staff were friendly and even though I was first in and on my own I felt very welcome and comfortable. The stream of regulars came in for their morning coffee and they greated everyone by name. They even offered to make my second latte extra hot as I was so cold!  They also have a coffee loyalty card, tenth cup free.

It was a beautiful morning on the Quayside, crisp and clear after the rain yesterday. The river was full and flat and despite the traffic had a tranquil feel. The sun popping over the top of the Sage was warming and very welcome! Sometimes you have to remind yourself to really look at the place you live and appreciate it.

I then couldn't resist popping into 5th Avenue Flowers across the street to admire the amazing display of flowers.  Apparently they were yet to receive their delivery later today, imagine the wall of flowers then!  I loved the chilli plants for sale outside, thinking they would be a great alternative gift for someone instead of the usual bouquet.

I treated myself to some of these white hydrangeas and quickly popped into Fenwicks for a teeny, tiny bit of retail therapy before getting back to some work.

Has anyone else tried Quay Ingredient?  I'm looking forward to trying their lunch menu at some point in the near future...

WOW! I am SO jealous that you went on a lovely quiet day and got to take lots of gorgeous piccies! I don't think I've ever seen Quay Ingredient that quiet. My birthday was on a Wednesday this year and we went there for breakfast before going shopping and even though it was mid week it was still so so busy!

I always love the idea of taking visiting friends there but you have to get in so early at the weekend to have a chance of getting a seat. I love it so much, the food is so so lovely!

It was lovely, but by the time I left it was packed and I gave up my table to another couple. I've been in with my parents a few times but have always had to leave again! But there is something about the cosy dimensions that adds to it's appeal! xx
